What is underground hypnosis? It goes by many names, such as covert hypnosis, conversational hypnosis, and even date hypnosis. It is the use of uncommon hypnotic techniques in settings other than formal, therapeutic, or entertainment venues. Done well, neither the subject nor any unenlightened bystanders will even be aware that there was any sort of hypnosis.

The majority of the techniques in question are variations of those pioneered by Dr. Milton Erickson, who was considered the premier innovator of hypnotic technique of the 20th century. Others are derived from the field of NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP). Many of the techniques involve more “waking suggestion” than hypnotic induction per se.

While it is not really mind control in the science fiction sense, the effects at the hands of a skilled and knowledgable practitioner can come remarkably close.
